Summit Releases COVID Statistics By Age Group For August
The Westfield Regional Health Commission has restarted weekly COVID updates, the city of Summit said. Here are numbers for August.
SUMMIT, NJ — The city of Summit on Friday released COVID case statistics by age group for the first two thirds of August.

"As the current rate of COVID-19 transmission continues to increase throughout the region," said a Summit spokeswoman, "the Westfield Regional Health Department has reinstated abbreviated weekly updates and will provide detailed information at the end of each month."

Although the Central East region of New Jersey remains in a high rate of transmission (map here), Summit shows a low level of activity, the spokesperson said.
Summit confirmed 69 cases from Aug. 1 through Aug. 19.

Here is the breakdown by age group:
· 26 cases aged 18 and younger;
· 3 cases aged 19 to 24;
· 3 cases aged 25 to 29;
· 3 cases aged 30 to 34;
· 3 cases aged 35 to 39;
· 10 cases aged 40 to 44;
· 3 cases aged 45 to 49;
· 7 cases aged 50 to 54;
· 3 cases aged 55 to 59;
· 3 cases aged 60 to 64;
· 1 case aged 65 to 69; and
· 4 cases aged 70 to 74.
The city said, "As a reminder, COVID-19 affects different people in different ways. Infected people have had a wide range of symptoms reported – from mild symptoms to severe illness."
Symptoms may include:
· Cough
· Sore throat
· Congestion or runny nose
· Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
· Fatigue
· Muscle or body aches
· Headache
· New loss of taste or smell
· Fever or chills
· Nausea or vomiting
· Diarrhea
"If you or a family member is experiencing any of these symptoms, remain home from work or school and get tested for COVID-19. Do not participate in sports or other activities – inside or outdoors - requiring close contact with others when feeling unwell," the city advised.

Local COVID Vaccine And Children's Vaccine Information
- COVID vaccines are available through the Westfield Regional Health Department by calling 908-789-4070, the County of Union at ucnj.org and Atlantic Health System at atlantichealth.org.

- Children under 12 cannot yet receive the COVID vaccine.
- The COVID vaccine is still 95 percent effective against the virus, according to medical professionals, and while vaccinated people may have "breakthrough cases," there is a lower chance of hospitalization or death.
- More than 620,000 Americans have now died from COVID (see which states have the highest recent death rates here). Most of those hospitalized with the virus are unvaccinated, say officials at the hospitals.
