SUMMIT, NJ - The Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School has launched the One Book One School program for the 2019-2020 school year, focused on the graphic novel "New Kid" by Jerry Craft.

One Book One School is a program that shares one book with students across all grades and their families. It is designed to share the love of reading with the entire school, not just one class, officials said.

Natalie Jorek, an eighth grader at LCJSMS, is helping to garner a lot of attention for the One Book One School 2019-2020 selection by creating artwork to celebrate the graphic novel.

Students will be reading the book throughout the school year and parents are encouraged to read it as well. Themes of this novel include fitting in, respecting and appreciating diversity, and friendship, officials said. The district said it is hoping to bring in the author for a visit in June.

The LCJSMS PTO and Christ Church donated multiple copies. Additionally, copies of the print book, eBook and audiobook are also available for checkout at the LCJSMS Library and the Summit Public Library.
