Summit YMCA and Overlook Hospital Win Kudos for Career Exploration Program

Summit YMCA and Overlook Hospital earned congratulations for their involvement in a partnership to help transitional students gain real-life work experience.

On June 24, Millburn High School honored 13 area businesses and organizations for taking part in its Career/Work Exploration Program. In addition to the Summit institutions, honorees included: the American Red Cross, Aramark, Charlie Brown's Steakhouse, Cora Harshorn Arboretum, CVS Millburn, the Millburn Fire Department, New Eyes for the Needy, St. Rose of Lima Church, Shop Rite of Springfield, Superkids and Walgreens.

“We are so proud to be a part of this worthwhile program and to have the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of the students,” said Patty Facchinei, Summit YMCA's volunteer coordinator. “Through the program, the students gain a sense of independence, responsibility and self-worth, which provides a strong foundation for their futures.”

Through the Career/Work Exploration Program, students get the opportunity to experience the world of work. They develop work skills, learn new skills, become involved in the community and prepare to become a member of the wider workforce. The students involved  get to work in businesses that relate to their individual interests and are given support to help succeed in their tasks as "employees."
