Summit's Latest COVID-19 Numbers Released Amid Delta Variant

As of Sunday, 711,020 Americans had died of coronavirus, up 11,000 from a week ago. See where Summit stands this week.

SUMMIT, NJ — As the Delta variant of COVID-19 continues to take lives in many states, Summit released its latest case numbers on Friday.

Amid the rise of the highly transmissible variant, 29 more cases were confirmed among Summit residents from Oct. 1-7, the city said. That was up slightly from 21 two weeks earlier.

There were no new confirmed COVID deaths in Summit.

The numbers are still lower than in January 2021, before the vaccine was widely available, a month in which 263 cases were diagnosed among Summit residents and two died.

Case numbers dwindled in May and June as vaccinations increased, and the city stopped releasing weekly reports. But with the transmissible Delta variant, cases are rising again.

Recent charts from one group of North Jersey hospitals show that most people who are hospitalized with the virus have not been vaccinated.

People under 12 still cannot be vaccinated.

As of Sunday night, 711,020 Americans have died from COVID, up 11,000 from a week ago.

Summit's case breakdown for Oct. 1-8 is:

• Two cases aged 12 to 18;

• One case aged 19 to 24;

• Four cases aged 25 to 29;

• Two cases aged 30 to 34;

• Two cases aged 35 to 39;

• Five cases aged 40 to 44;

• Five cases aged 45 to 49;

• Three cases aged 50 to 54;
