Summit's Ride Sharing Partnership Now Using Lyft

Summit residents with prepaid parking permits are eligible for free rides to and from the train station during weekday commuting hours.

SUMMIT, NJ — Summit City has voted to continue its ride sharing program for Summit commuters for another year. The program will use Lyft to get locals to and from the train station, instead of having to find parking in the badly congested downtown area.

The City program, the first of its kind in New Jersey, was implemented in October 2016 originally using Uber. This year, the City is switching over to Lyft. The change will be effective on Dec. 4.

The ride sharing program is also expanding to be offered to 50 more residents, who are on the waiting list, adding to the 150 who already use it.

Enhancements have been made to the program as well including: the ability for participants to schedule rides a minimum of 30 minutes and up to seven days in advance and the program hours have been extended to 11 p.m.

The location for evening pickup has also been changed to the Railroad Avenue side of the train station. Ride sharing program participants will no longer be picked up at the post office.

Current program participants will need to download the Lyft mobile application and set up a Lyft account before to Dec. 4. To enroll, visit cityofsummit.org/ridesharing.

Under the city’s program, Summit residents with prepaid parking permits are eligible for free rides to and from the station during weekday commuting hours; residents without prepaid permits will be eligible for $2 rides, which is equivalent to the cost of the city’s $4 daily parking. Trips must begin or end within Summit or at the train station and be completed Monday through Friday between the hours of 5AM and 11PM.
