Today from Bedtime Math: What Does the Fox Say?

Try this fun math challenge with your kids!

There are hundreds of millions of videos out there to watch from your computer, and most of them get viewed by just a few thousand people. But once in a while a video comes along that seemingly everyone on the planet ends up watching, and "What Does the Fox Say?" by the band Ylvis is one of them. The idea is that we all know what sounds most animals make - cows go moo, elephants go toot, and according to Ylvis, fish simply say "blub" (we never knew that). But what sound does a fox make? Clearly a lot of people were wondering the same thing, because as of today the video has been watched almost 195 million times (that's 195,000,000). The video has gone "viral," meaning it's being passed from one quacking, mooing fan to many others just like people passing a virus or sickness. But learning that foxes say gering-ding-ding and tchoffo-tchoffo-tchoff sounds like much more fun.

Now here's today's math~

Wee ones: According to Ylvis, foxes have big blue eyes, pointy noses, tiny paws and red fur. How many kinds of fox body parts does Ylvis sing about?

Little kids: The guy dressed up as a fox dances in the forest with 9 other foxes in white shirts and black ties. How many dancers is that in total?  Bonus: If half the dancers are girls (as some of them in ties are), how many girls is that?

Big kids: If the video gets 1 million more views every day from now until the end of the year, how many more views will it get? (Reminder: November has 30 days and December has 31.)  Bonus: How many views will it have in total if it started today with exactly 195 million?

Answers:

Wee ones: 4 kinds of body parts.

Little kids: 10 dancers.  Bonus: 5 girl dancers.

Big kids: 56 million (56,000,000) more views, for 25 days in November (because you subtract out just the first 5 days), plus 31 in December.  Bonus: 251 million (251,000,000) views in total.
