Unexpected Resignation Announced At Summit Council Meeting

Councilman Bob Pawlowski said growing demands from his legal career led to his resignation from the Summit Common Council.

SUMMIT, NJ — Bob Pawlowski announced his resignation during the May 19 Summit Common Council meeting, saying he could no longer balance the demands of public office with an increasingly busy legal career.

Pawlowski said his resignation will take effect at the close of business on May 22.

“With a heavy heart, I announce my resignation from council,” Pawlowski said. “2026 and 2027 will be two of the busiest career years of my career as a lawyer.”

He said he ultimately felt he could no longer provide residents with the level of service they deserve while managing both responsibilities.

During his remarks, Pawlowski reflected on several initiatives completed during his time on the council, including efforts involving public safety, affordable housing, historic preservation, and improvements at Tatlock Park.

He also offered parting advice to fellow council members.

“Just do what’s best for Summit,” Pawlowski said.

The announcement prompted emotional responses from several council members.

Council President Claire Toth praised Pawlowski for his dedication to the city despite occasional disagreements.

“I will miss our public sparring and private cooperation,” Toth said. “You have pushed all of us to do our jobs better.”

Jamel Boyer also thanked Pawlowski for his service, calling him “an advocate to the highest degree.”

“I respect his decision because I've seen what he has poured into this office,” Boyer said.

Pawlowski was elected as a Republican, and local party officials are expected to submit candidates for the council to consider as a replacement for the remainder of his term.
