Westfield's Latest COVID-19 Numbers Released Amid Delta Variant

WESTFIELD, NJ — As the Delta variant of COVID-19 continues to take lives in many states, Westfield released its latest case numbers.

Amid the rise of the highly transmissible variant, 29 more cases were confirmed among residents from Oct. 1-7, the town said, down from 34 the previous week and 42 the week before that.

The age ranges are:

• Age 9 and under: 5 cases
• Age 10-19: 4 cases
• Age 20-29: 3 cases
• Age 30-39: 3 cases
• Age 40-49: 8 cases
• Age 50-59: 4 cases
• Age 60-69: 1 case
• Age 70-79: 1 cases
• Age 80-89: No cases
• Age 90 and above: No cases

Mayor Shelley Brindle said the following populations are vaccinated in Westfield: 93 percent of those 65 and older, 93 percent of those 30 and older, 94 percent of adults 18 and over, 90 percent of those 12 and older, and 74 percent of the entire population.

Children under 12 can't be vaccinated yet, but, the mayor noted, "The FDA will hold an Advisory Committee meeting on Oct. 26 to review the Emergency Use Authorization of the Pfizer vaccine for children ages five through 11. The FDA Advisory Committee will also meet on Oct. 14 and 15 to review expanding the current Emergency Use Authorizations for the Moderna and J&J vaccines to include booster doses."

"They carry Pfizer (primary series and booster doses) and J&J at the clinics, and residents can receive Moderna (primary series and third dose) by making an appointment," the mayor said. The Health Department website has a schedule of upcoming clinics.

Recent charts from one group of North Jersey hospitals show that most people who are hospitalized with the virus have not been vaccinated.

COVID In New Jersey And America

As of Sunday night, 711,020 Americans have died from COVID, up 11,000 from a week ago.

In New Jersey 923 people were in hospitals battling the virus on Friday, 122 of those on ventialtors.

This week’s state map shows the Central East region in high activity, as the state drops to moderate activity levels. Although part of the Central East region, Westfield is showing moderate activity levels, the mayor said.
