Why I Support Rebecca Bennett for NJ7

I write today to outline the reasons why I support Rebecca Bennett for Congress in NJ’s 7th District, and why I think you should too. I got to know Rebecca when I was a candidate running for the nomination for the 7th District as well. It’s clear that Rebecca is knowledgeable on the issues, principled, and deeply committed to service. On the campaign trail, lots of people give candidates feedback and advice. Rebecca listens, makes people feel heard, and learns from every interaction. These qualities not only make her a good candidate, but also are what we need in an effective representative.

Rebecca appeals to a broad coalition of Democrats, unaffiliated voters, and moderate Republicans. Studies show that veterans receive 6% more votes than other Democrats. That’s the margin we need to win this race. She has also put out thoughtful policy positions to take on the challenges Congress will face. I am such a big fan of her campaign charter. Rebecca is upfront about her vision, leads with her values, and makes voters feel confident about how she thinks.

Additionally, Rebecca has the strongest team, and one that understands this district. Rebecca won support from four of the six Democratic County organizations in the district. I am the Chairman of the Summit Democrats, and I think it’s commendable that all candidates participated in these endorsement processes, which were rigorous, thoughtful, and driven by local Democrats who are deeply engaged. Rebecca is also backed by national organizations and Members of Congress, along with over 100 current and former elected officials in the district who know what it takes to win and what resources our counties and towns need from the federal government.

Rebecca has raised the most money. And while Democrats must pursue meaningful campaign finance reform, the reality is that resources are critically important to win. Investing in your own campaign is admirable but unsustainable. Rebecca has raised more than $2.7M (as of Q1 FEC filing) and none is self-funded. Donations to Rebecca’s campaign come from over 13,000 individual donors, 93% of whom donated less than $100, reflecting the breadth of her support.

We have four great candidates seeking the nomination. I’ve gotten to know all of them on the campaign trail, and in any district around the country they would all be considered top tier candidates. However, I believe that only Rebecca has the skills and the experience to win and hold this critical seat. I am looking forward to robust turnout in this primary, to casting my vote for Rebecca Bennett, and to coming together to support Democrats up and down the ballot in November. I’m asking you to cast your ballot for Rebecca Bennett on or before June 2nd.
