Sheryl Intrator an artist who often focus’s on art with a purpose, and is drawn to Jewish themed art. Her art work Exodus from Egypt is featured in the Exhibition. She is drawn to creating artwork with a purpose, the purpose is to communicate her ideas with the viewer. Idea’s she tries to convey using colors, forms and sometimes narratives in her visual art. Intrator Urman has used religious ideas as a theme in many of her paintings. Exodus from Egypt, is a religious abstract painting. Using the abstract formate appealed to Intrator Urman, because she wants the viewer to think about the Jewish concepts and to connect with her idea. She wants to connect her idea visual art to the theme of this show and give a message of Freedom. What Freedom do we relate too as Jews? Every year on Passover we all feel and relate to the Freedom of the Israelites from Bondage in Egypt. The painting commemorates the great Exodus of the Jewish People who were slaves in Egypt. It is a celebration of Freedom from oppression and marks the beginning of the Jewish People as a nation. Intrator Urman chose to use simple elements to remind us of the Egyptian Pyramids and also the 12 tribes which were represented by colors on the Breast Plate worn by the high priest (kohen gadol). Intrator Urman chose colors to represent each tribe. She shows all 12 tribes lining up and they are shown in the action of leaving Egypt. The 12 tribes eventually meld together and are then painted as a united nation, going to Israel.
