A Full Guide to Properly Washing and Styling a Wig

All natural European wigs have become a luxury-demand item among women looking for high-quality hair in every strand. Given the investment in these wigs, proper care is vital.  Virgin European Wigs need to be washed every 20 full day wears. 

Follow these tips by stylist Flora Shepelsky, to keep wigs looking natural and beautiful around the clock.

Step 1: Delicacy
is key when it comes to washing a human hair wig.  Before washing a wig, gently brush it using a vent brush by starting at the ends and working up towards the base of the cap.

Step 2:  Pin the wig to the Styrofoam head. Use six T-pins: two at the sides of the skin top, two at the ear tabs, and two at the nape.

Step 3:  Fill up a small basin with lukewarm water and add two tablespoons of salon quality cleansing shampoo.

Step 4:  Gently dip the wig in the basin five or six times, then rinse well and repeat once. After rinsing away the shampoo, repeat process with conditioner.

Step 5:  Rinse well and transfer to a dry Styrofoam head.

Step 6:  Brush the wet wig and add in desired product such as mousse or gel. Allow wig to air dry overnight. 

Step 7:  In the morning, style with the hot tool of your choice, preferably ionic or ceramic salon quality tools (blow dryer, curling iron, etc). High heat settings should be used when working with virgin hair wigs, and medium to low settings for processed hair wigs. 

Note: When styling, use of working sprays over super hold sprays are best.  Leave in conditioners should be used sparingly and only at the ends.
