Congresswoman splits party by opposing antisemitism resolution.

New Jersey Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman voted against House Resolution 894, which strongly condemned the recent rise in anti-Semitism in the United States and around the world.

This comes as the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) reported a staggering 388% increase in anti-Semitic hate crimes following the Hamas attack of October 7th. The ADL recorded 312 incidents compared to just 64 during the same period in 2022.

While other Democrat representatives from New Jersey, including Josh Gottheimer, Donald Norcross, Frank Pallone, and Bill Pascrell, voted in favor of the resolution, Andy Kim abstained, in a move that contradicts his March 7, 2019, pledge to "always stand up against bigotry and hate in all its forms."

He once condemned "anti-Semitism" when a candidate in a Republican primary campaign distributed a mailer featuring a picture of a person wearing a shtreimel. The mailer illustrated one GOP contender's opposition to an overdevelopment deal that was supported by the man wearing the traditional Jewish fur hat, who was a also contributor to his political opponent.

The discrepancy between Kim's past and present statements has drawn criticism from constituents, including some who say that will not be supporting his bid for US Senate as a result. Kim —who announced he would challenge his 2018 running mate—when Senator Robert Menendez was indicted for the second time earlier this year.

Lisa McCormick, who ran against Menendez in 2018, commented, "I just feel it is time to stop being crazy."

"I believe there is a common sense perspective that is missing in Washington today," said McCormick. "I have no problem condemning antisemitism in the US or terrorist tactics used by Hamas, although I disagree with some of Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's actions. As Americans, we ought to unanimously stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Israel at this tragic time."

Lisa McCormick's frustration is shared by many who believe that elected officials should take a stronger stand against all forms of bigotry, including anti-Semitism.

This sentiment has prompted her to issue a call for candidates on behalf of Democrats for Change, an organization that supports independent-minded candidates and progressive policies.
