Art Opening: Teaneck Artist, Tim Hoyt

Tim Hoyt was born in Manhattan in 1989, but his family moved to Teaneck shortly after. Unbeknownst to him, it was the relationships he formed in Teaneck that would later become the foundation of his art. He started out painting portraits of close friends and family but as his work developed, so did a narrative. The style in which his subjects were portrayed began to lean away from formal portraiture and more toward the iconic, making their identities arbitrary.

In his current work, Tim uses portraiture to convey a variety of different characteristics and concepts, the most important being conflict. His subjects not only meet the viewer’s gaze, but also challenge it. They are caught between two states of existence: as individuals within their own canvas, and their undeniable, collective gestalt as a body of work. While they revel in their youth, beauty, and grandeur, their imperiousness makes them all the more two-dimensional, almost distorted.

Tim received his BFA from the Pennsylvania State University in 2011.
