About the Artists:
Judi Adel
Born in The Bronx, New York, Judith Adel is the oldest of seven. She has lived in Teaneck, NJ for about 25 years. She began painting when she was in second grade and by the sixth grade, her tempera abstracts were hanging in the "Painting of the Month" spot. Judith painted through high school in New York, where she majored in art. But when she started City College, as a English and political science major, she put her painting aside for a while. The "while" turned out to be much longer than anticipated -- she switched to night classes and started working when she was seventeen -- as a journalist and graphic designer.
ARTIST STATEMENT
About nine years ago I decided to take a local watercolor class, presented by Elise Morenon, a most gifted watercolorist and instructor. Watercolor became my medium of choice. I had painted with oils before but now I found my passion. My style is representational and I have been described as a colorist.
I had always heard that watercolor was difficult, that it was an unforgiving medium. Well, that's true. But it's also transformational. You can achieve incredible effects -- some planned, some serendipitous. You literally have to go with the flow -- water mixing with transparent and opaque paints. You hope you can maintain some control of the elements.
I enjoy painting many subjects -- landscapes, people, clouds, flowers, still life -- anything and everything that interests me. Many of my paintings are based on photographs I've taken.
I have been represented in solo and group exhibitions in New Jersey and New York.
