Teaneck’s own boat builder, Jim Norman, will present another free hands-on demonstration and talk on how to build your own beautiful, light-weight wooden kayak, at the Teaneck General Store on Wednesday evening, Sept. 21.

Jim started construction on the Wood Duckling last July, when he and Teaneck General Store proprietor Bruce Prince invited people to come and help form the hull of a shapely little kayak from pre-cut panels of exquisitely grained marine plywood.

Now that construction has advanced, people will get a chance to see what the boat looks like with the hull fully formed and the deck in place, almost ready to accommodate the builder’s 5-year-old grandson, Julio.

The Wood Duckling is a scaled-down version of the adult-sized Wood Duck, and like its grown-up parent it starts as a kit from Chesapeake Light Craft in Annapolis, Md. The Wood Duckling is designed especially for kids who weigh between 35 and 100 pounds, although it can safely accommodate much more than that. When it is finished, it will be eight feet long and weigh a scant 22 pounds.

The Wood Duckling’s ease of construction makes it an ideal project for grandparents to build for their grandchildren and generations of grandchildren who follow. Jim is available to coach first-time boat builders on how to get started, then to come back for later sessions if any questions or problems arise. He is also available to build complete boats, ready for the water, on commission.

If you’d like to get a small taste of what the first session was like, follow this link for Teaneck Patch coverage of last July’s workshop: .

But if you really want to get a feel for what it is like to participate in the actual building of a boat, come to the Teaneck General Store at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21. At the same time, you’ll get a chance to see the adult-sized 12-foot Wood Duck, hanging on the store’s wall.
