Holy Name has expanded its portfolio of innovative technologies through the purchase of the ExcelsiusFlexTM, a next-generation robotic navigation platform, designed to help surgeons perform total knee replacement procedures more accurately and efficiently. With this purchase, Holy Name has become the only medical center in the world to utilize all three platforms in Globus Medical’s Excelsius Ecosystem, which also includes ExcelsiusGPS™ and Excelsius3DTM.

“We have experienced improved accuracy and more efficient procedures using the ExcelsiusGPS robotic navigation platform and Excelsius3D imaging system for spinal surgeries at Holy Name,” says Dr. Dennis Pfisterer, Chief of Orthopedics at Holy Name Medical Center. “The addition of ExcelsiusFlex further expands the capabilities of our navigation platform across a wide range of cases.”

The ExcelsiusFlex robotic navigation platform offers benefits to surgeons, staff and patients:

  • Surgeon-centered control: the platform integrates a low-profile planar end effector, offering tactile feedback and visibility with the familiar cutting feel of a manual procedure, giving ergonomic control back to the surgeon.
  • Seamless flexibility: it enables a more personalized surgical plan regardless of preferred workflow by consolidating both imageless and CT-based workflows and robust surgeon-specific preferences into a compact, floor-mounted robotic base station.
  • Accuracy without constraints: it is engineered for unrestricted access to resections while maintaining accuracy through active robotic arm adjustments during cutting to account for patient leg movement. This allows for consistency without sacrificing usability.

“We are excited about the transformative potential of robotic-assisted platforms like the ExcelsiusFlex, which are setting new standards for precision and efficiency in surgical procedures,” says Vasantha Kondamudi, MD, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Holy Name. “Our goal is always to provide the highest quality of care and produce the strongest outcomes for each patient. Having the best-in-class tools and technologies available to our team helps us achieve this goal.”

As a teaching hospital, Holy Name stays at the leading edge of the latest robotic surgical techniques. In 2025, Holy Name launched a new General Surgical Residency program as part of the Graduate Medical Education program. This includes the addition of robotic simulators to teach and train residents, fellows, and other surgeons.
