New Teaneck Mayor Is First Muslim-American To Hold The Position In Bergen County: Report

Mohammed Hammeeduddin was sworn in Friday.

TEANECK, N.J. — The first Muslim-American mayor in Bergen County history was sworn into office Friday.

Mohammed Hameeduddin was named the new mayor of the borough at the Town Council's annual reorganization meeting Friday. He is the first Muslim-American to hold the office in the county, politickernj.com reported. His term will be two years.

Eli Katz had been serving as Teaneck's acting mayor since the sudden death of Lizette Parker in April. Katz was sworn in as the first deputy mayor. Henry Pruitt was selected as second deputy mayor, the report said. Their terms will also be for two years.

The Town Council created the second deputy mayor position in May following Parker's death.
