Death Of Bergen County Teacher Prompts Administrators To Offer Counseling In Schools

Counseling will be offered to students in Bergen County after a local teacher and father of two died at 47.

TEANECK, NJ — Counseling will be offered to students in the Teaneck public schools after a teacher died on Thursday, officials said.

Gorki Marcelo, a business teacher at Teaneck High School, passed away at 47, according to his obituary.

Interim Superintendent of Schools Angela Davis wrote in an email to the school community last week, "During this incredibly difficult time, we extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Marcelo's wife Omaira, their daughters, Leilani and Alina, and all of his family, friends, colleagues, students, and former students who are mourning this tremendous loss."

Grief counseling was available starting Monday in the Forum from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and support will also be offered during the first week of school from 8-4, Davis aid.

The Bergen County Traumatic Loss Coalition will also provide on-site counseling to staff and students on the first day of school, Sept. 3, Davis said, offering a link for more counseling.

School officials confirmed the letter for Patch but did not offer further details.
