Teaneck Man Charged With Bribing U.S. Official

Luis Santos, 27, allegedly offered to pay a U.S. Department of State employee $2,700 to favorably handle visas from the Dominican Republic.

TEANECK, NJ — A township man was arrested and charged Wednesday with offering to bribe a federal employee.

Luis Santos, 27, was charged with bribery of a public official, U.S Attorney Craig Carpenito announced.

Santos offered to pay a United States Consular Adjudicator about $2,700 to favorably handle and review non-immigrant visas, which allow residents of the Dominican Republic to apply for entry into the United States, the criminal complaint against Santos states.

Santos faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000 if convicted on the charge.

Santos is scheduled to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge James Clark III in Newark federal court Wednesday.
