Police Chief In Bergen County Retires, Council To Swear In Successor

TEANECK, NJ — Former Teaneck Police Chief Andrew McGurr retired on the first day of the month, and the new chief will be sworn in at a council meeting Tuesday.

McGurr's retirement after 33 years of service was announced on Sept. 3.

In a message to residents, town officials said, "McGurr has devoted his career to protecting and serving the Teaneck community, rising through the ranks and earning the respect of many. Throughout his tenure as chief, he has been recognized for his steady leadership, commitment to public safety, and, perhaps most importantly, his ability to develop and prepare the next generation of leaders."

Mayor Mark Schwartz said, "Chief McGurr has given more than three decades of his life to the community of Teaneck, and we are incredibly grateful for his service. “His leadership, professionalism, and commitment to this community even during times of unrest has left a lasting mark."

“He leads with experience and confidence," said Town Manager Jacklyn Hashmat, "but also with thoughtfulness and a genuine concern for the people around him."

Kriegel Takes Over

Deputy Chief Seth Kriegel will be sworn in as chief at Tuesday's council meeting.

"Kriegel has worked alongside Chief McGurr in all aspects of the daily operations of the department," the town said. "Through that experience, he has been extensively prepared for this responsibility and has demonstrated the judgment, professionalism, and leadership necessary to guide the department forward."

“One of Chief McGurr’s greatest strengths has been his commitment to developing the people around him, and Deputy Chief Kriegel is a reflection of that,” said Hashmat. “Seth understands this department and our community, and has been well prepared for this next step. I have tremendous confidence in his ability to lead our officers, continue the progress we have made, and build upon the strong foundation Chief McGurr leaves behind.”

The Meeting

The council meeting will begin at 6 p.m.

After Kriegel is sworn in, the council is schedule to go into closed session, returning to open session at 8 p.m. for other business.
