The State of New Jersey may experience increased mosquito activity due to heavy rain, flooding, and weather conditions. Mosquitoes are a nuisance however, they also pose a public health risk. Mosquitoes are capable of transmitting diseases such as: West Nile Virus as well as a number of other diseases not common to our area, such as: Dengue Fever, Chikungunya, and Zika Virus.

In order to help control the presence of mosquitoes, there are a number of things that residents can do to protect their properties. Some of these protective and preventative measures are as follows:
- Make sure there is no stagnant water on the property
- Eliminate sources of stagnant water
- Keep unused pots and cans stored upside-down
- Keep swimming pools and ponds clean and operable at all times or covered if not in use
- Make sure gutters and leaders are unclogged, working properly and not dripping or leaking
- Bird baths/pet bowls should be changed regularly
- Use window/door screens. Repair holes in screens to keep mosquitoes outside and use air conditioning when possible.
In addition to the physical control measures to your property, you should also protect yourselves when outside by doing the following:

- Limit time outside when mosquito activity is higher
- Wear a hat or keep hair pulled back
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outside, walking, gardening, etc.
- Apply repellent according to the manufacturer’s specifications on the container
In Bergen County, spraying for mosquitoes is performed by the Bergen County Mosquito Commission. To request spraying, file a complaint, or just have a general inquiry, you can contact them at (201) 634-2880, (201) 634-2881, or at (201) 225-7000.
Please note that the Bergen County Mosquito Commission will be applying pesticides for the control and reduction of adult mosquito population on an area-wide, as needed, throughout Bergen County during the period from April 30, 2020 to October 31, 2020.
