Fatal Shooting At NJ Wawa Under Investigation, Prosecutor Says

TOMS RIVER, NJ — One person has died after a shooting at Wawa on Route 37 in Toms River on Friday, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said.

The shooting happened about 7:20 a.m. in the parking lot at the Wawa at the corner of Route 37 and Garfield avenues, Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said.

The prosecutor's office did not release any additional details on the shooting or about the victim.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call the Major Crime Unit at the prosecutor's office at 732-929-2027 or the Toms River Police Department at 732-349-0150.

The shooting and the investigation were not affecting nearby Toms River Regional schools, Superintendent Michael Citta said.

"We are operating normally," he said.

An alert at 7:50 a.m. from the Ocean County Sheriff's Office urged people to avoid the area of Route 37 and Garfield due to police activity.

A witness told Patch there is yellow crime scene tape around the area of the gas pumps at the Wawa, and vehicles from the Toms River Police Department, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and the sheriff's office are at the site.
