As Brick residents worked to dig out their vehicles Friday morning, officials reminded motorists to take the driving slowly.

Thursday’s storm dropped 9 inches of snow in Brick, according to the National Weather Service, on top of an icy coating created by the sleet that preceded the snow. The Ocean County Sheriff’s Office is urging drivers to exercise caution, particularly if they have to drive the Garden State Parkway, which is reported to be very icy.

Mayor John Ducey said road crews have been working Wednesday night, first salting the roads before the storm hit. The plowing took place in two shifts, he said, with 78 trucks hitting the roads beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday, finishing a 15-hour shift with 7-1/2 hours of plowing, he said. The second shift of 81 trucks took over at 8:30 p.m., Ducey said.

“We finished the plowing at 5:30 a.m. and we have a few trucks out on the road cleaning up the corners,” he said.

Main roads that were still icy early this morning after temperatures dipped into single digits overnight appear to be finally clearing as the sunlight is giving an assist to the salt.
