Code Blue Activated In Toms River For March 22-23
The Code Blue alert means the township will open its Riverwood Park shelter overnight for those who are homeless.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — Toms River officials have activated a Code Blue alert for Friday, March 22 into Saturday, March 23.
The alert posted on the township's social media comes as temperatures are expected to dip into the low 30s Friday night, along with thunderstorms in the forecast, according to the National Weather Service.
The alert says kitchen help is needed to assist with providing meals at the Code Blue shelter at Riverwood Park both Friday and Saturday. Those willing to volunteer can contact team leader Michele by email at mdigregorio58@gmail.com.

The Township Council passed an ordinance earlier this year creating a Code Blue alert system to provide shelter for the homeless during extreme winter weather. The Code Blue goes into effect when the temperature is expected to be 35 degrees or colder.
The ordinance was a response to concerns raised about the homeless who had sometimes been sheltered at the now-closed Red Carpet Motel on Water Street as well as ongoing issues of homelessness in the township.
