TOMS RIVER, NJ — A Donovan Catholic junior has been selected to attend a leadership conference for students pursuing medical careers in June in Massachusetts.

Kaylynn Gerrity has been chosen as a delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders, which will be held in Lowell, Massachusetts, near Boston.

" The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country interested in these careers, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal," a statement from the Future Medical Leaders organization said.

Gerrity's nomination was signed by Dr. Mario Capecchi, winner of the Nobel Prize in medicine and the science director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists, based on her academic achievement, leadership potential and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine.

During the three-day event, Gerrity and students from across the country will hear from Nobel laureates and National Medal of Science winners about leading medical research. They will receive advice from Ivy League and top medical school deans on what to expect in medical school and learn about cutting-edge advances and the future in medicine and medical technology.

The event aims to help encourage students to pursue medicine at a time where the field is changing dramatically, the organization said.

In addition to the congress, the organization offers programs and assistance for students who want to become doctors or go into medical science, including advice, access to mentoring, information on college including financial advice, internships and career guidance.

"The National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists was founded on the belief that we must identify prospective medical talent at the earliest possible age and help these students acquire the necessary experience and skills to take them to the doorstep of this vital career," the organization said.
