ISLAND HEIGHTS, NJ — Island Heights Grade School has been named a National Blue Ribbon School for 2020, according to the federal Department of Education.

It is one of nine New Jersey schools and one of 367 schools across the country to receive the honor.

Island Heights, which serves kindergarten through sixth-grade students in the borough, which has a population of about 1,700.

"Educating the students of Island Heights Grade School goes beyond the walls of our classrooms," the school's application said, and the town serves as the backdrop for many learning experiences.

"Students grow to appreciate the rich history of Island Heights through classroom lessons, guest speakers, and walking trips. Our quaint school is located within walking distance of the Barnegat Bay, which provides students the chance to learn about the local environment," it noted.

Because it is a small school, it "offers us a remarkable opportunity as a staff to truly get to know each child and their academic and social-emotional abilities," the school said.

The school touts its character education, which it says results in a team-oriented culture, in addition to its academics.

"This has led our students to take an active role in giving back to local community organizations. Through Project TEAM, our Sea Devils learn the six foundations of good character: helping others, positive change, anti-bullying, problem solving and conflict resolution, resiliency, and leadership," the school said. "These foundations have created a happy climate in our school that has resulted in positive student growth and achievement!"

National Blue Ribbon Schools are honored at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC, where each receives a plaque and flag to signify its exemplary status.

Public schools are nominated by the chief state school officer in each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Department of Defense Education Activity and the Bureau of Indian Education.
