CLINGING JELLYFISH
From the state Department of Environmental Protection
The Metedeconk River in Brick Township has been the hotspot for clinging jellyfish, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection's clinging jellyfish map. The most recent sampling was July 10. Monitoring in several other areas has not yielded any clinging jellyfish so far, but Paul Bologna, biologist at Montclair State University and an expert on New Jersey's jellyfish, warns they could be there and to exercise caution.
These tiny creatures can be found in and around submerged aquatic vegetation and algae in back bays and estuaries. Their sting can produce severe pain and other localized symptoms and can result in hospitalization in some people. Anyone wading through these areas should take precautions such as wearing boots or waders to protect themselves.
