Kohr's Frozen Custard Opens Year-Round In Toms River

Fans of the dairy treat will be happy to know they can get that taste of summer year-round.

Toms River, NJ -- There's some things that just say "summer at the Jersey Shore:" New York license plates, the lights on the boardwalk rides and ice cream.

Kohr's Frozen Custard, to be exact.

The familiar orange-and-vanilla twist cone has long been reserved for trips to the Seaside Heights and Point Pleasant Beach boardwalks, and limited to the summer months, when people line up for the cool, creamy treat.

Now, however, fans of the frozen custard will be able to get the year-round, as Bruce Kohr has opened a new location on Hooper Avenue in Toms River.

The shop is next to the B.E.A.T. Center in the Silverton section of town and the sign was lifted into place the same day the B.E.A.T. Center held its ribbon-cutting in early May.

The Hooper Avenue store, which opened just before Memorial Day, is home to the Kohr's family's heirloom custard machine, which has been churning out frozen custard for nearly 100 years, according to the Kohr's Frozen Custard websites.

Bruce Kohr is one of three family members who own Kohr's stands, according to the Kohr's Facebook page. Two in Seaside Heights are owned by Bruce Kohr's cousin Greg, and the Kohr's stand on the Point Pleasant Beach boardwalk is owned by his brother, Jack, he has told fans on Facebook.

The iconic Jersey Shore brand took a hit, when Superstorm Sandy destroyed two of the Seaside Heights stands in 2012, and the Seaside Heights/Seaside Park boardwalk fire in September 2013 destroyed all four of the stands Bruce Kohr owned -- three in Seaside Park and one in Seaside Heights.

Customers posted dozens of messages in the wake of the fire, which was determined by investigators to be an accident. Nearly three years after the fire, Kohr is waiting to see whether the Seaside Park locations will be rebuilt, as those locations -- including the site where the fire started, Biscayne Candies -- were owned by others and the Kohr space leased.  Kohr owned the stand with the blue roof that stood at Farragut Avenue.

In February, he began posting photos of construction at the interior of the new site, and in March announced it would be open year-round, much to the delight of fans.

The shop is located at 1769 Hooper Ave. and the website says they offer cookies and cake pops as well as the custard that brings fans back again and again.
