The Weather Channel currently says as many as eight to 12 inches could fall in the region, but more accurate accumulation estimates will be released in the coming days. The National Weather Service has less severe predictions.

While "there is still considerable uncertainty with details, including exact snow amounts" the NWS says there could be "major" impacts to travel, especially during the day Tuesday.
"There is the potential for a major snowstorm, and possible nor'easter, especially from New York City to New England spanning Tuesday and Tuesday night," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Henry Margusity said in a release.
Here is what is predicted:
- Snow: Accumulating snow is likely across the region. At this point, the highest risk for accumulating snow amounts enough to cause major impacts is along and northwest of the Interstate 95 corridor.
- Note: Due to inherent uncertainty with snow amount forecasts, our storm total snow forecast only goes through 72 hours. The storm total snow graphic currently does not yet include the entire storm.
- Coastal Flooding: There is a chance for widespread minor coastal flooding with this storm. The highest risk is with the high tide cycle that occurs Tuesday morning/mid day. The highest risk is along the Atlantic shoreline.
- Strong Winds: There is a chance for strong winds gusting 40 to 50 mph primarily near and at the shore on Tuesday.
- Timing: Precipitation is expected to move in Monday evening. The heaviest precipitation and strongest winds are expected to occur during the day Tuesday. Precipitation is expected to taper off Tuesday night into Wednesday.
How quickly the storm strengthens and how close to the coast it tracks will determine the severity of the impacts, forecasters say.
If the storm strengthens slowly near the Atlantic coast, then only a light amount of snow could develop. The more likely scenario, according to AccuWeather, is that the storm will strengthen rapidly, resulting in "a far-reaching major nor'easter could unfold with blizzard conditions in some locations."
