Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus Presents Late March Community Health Education and Support

Be Prepared for Anything: Benefits of Self-Defense Lunch and Learn
Monday, March 21 at 11:30 a.m.
Self-defense is a combination of education and preparedness. This session, presented by Walter Miller, black belt and self defense instructor at the Center for Living (Center for Living or the Center for Healthy Living), will help you discover what you can do to protect yourself, as well as the benefits of protection and how to improve your balance and strength. Walter will also provide a demo of what protection techniques he teaches at the Center for Health Living. Lunch will be served for all attendees. This program, for Better Health members only, takes place at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus’ Conference Rooms A and B, located at 600 River Avenue in Lakewood. Aging Eyes
Tuesday, March 22 at 12:30 p.m.
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, by age 65, one in three Americans will have a vision-impairing eye disease. To remind the public of the importance of eye care, Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus presents Aging Eyes. This program will discuss how to keep eyes healthy and how to recognize that it’s time for a professional eye exam. Aging Eyes takes place at SCAN (Social Community Activities Network) at the Freehold YMCA Community Center, located at 41 Center Street in Freehold. Build Your Brain
Wednesday, March 23 from 11 a.m. to noon
A strong memory is dependent on the health and vitality of your brain. In a partnership with SCAN (Social Community Activities Network) and Boscov’s at the Ocean County Mall, Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus presents Build Your Brain. Led by a health coach from the Center for Healthy Aging, this program will discuss how cognitive decline, including memory loss, forgetfulness and confusion, is not a normal part of aging. The health coach will also discuss normal signs of aging, as well as what may need to be medically evaluated. This program is held at Boscov’s Conference Room in the Ocean County Mall, located on Hooper Avenue in Toms River. Caregivers Support Group
Tuesdays, March 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 from Noon to 2 p.m.
AND Wednesdays, March 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 from 12:15 to 2:15 p.m.
This ongoing weekly support group is open to anyone who is caring for a person age 60 or older living in Ocean County. It is sponsored by Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus and the Ocean County Office of Senior Services. Facilitated by Kathleen Holahan, MSW, LCSW, this group is held at the Center for Healthy Living, located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood. Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group
Wednesdays, March 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Offered by Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, this free ongoing support group helps participants learn and share with others facing the unique challenges of being a “grandfamily.” Facilitated by Kathleen Holahan, MSW, LCSW, this group is held at the Center for Healthy Living, located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood.
