Community Health Education events presented by Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus
SCAN - Brain Health Fair
Friday, May 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Co-sponsored by SCAN of New Jersey and Community Services, Inc. of Ocean County, this event features free screenings, health information and an educational lecture “Giving Your Memory an A+ as You Age” led by Jessica L. Israel, MD, Regional Director of Geriatrics and Palliative Care at Monmouth Medical Center and Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus. Vendors and representatives from local hospitals will be on hand to provide tips and information about brain health and fitness, along with fun brain teasers to keep your brain active. Chair Yoga
Fridays, May 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 2 to 3 p.m.
Join the Center for Healthy Living at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus on Fridays to “get fit while you sit” as they present Chair Yoga, an exercise class for seniors. Relax your mind and body from a seated position, without the worry of getting up and down on the floor. Learn how to improve muscle tone, increase flexibility and circulation and alleviate stiff joints, all while increasing your overall health and well-being. This program will be held at the Center for Healthy Living at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood. Each session costs $5.
Glucose Screenings
Tuesday, May 10 from 9 to 10 a.m.
Do you have diabetes? The disease affects 29.1 million people – and 8.1 million are unaware they have diabetes. Learn your risk by joining the Center for Healthy Living at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus for free glucose screenings by a registered nurse who is a Certified Diabetes Educator. Fasting is not required, but please do not eat two hours before your test. Screenings are offered at the Center for Healthy Living, located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood. Self-Defense for Older Adults
Tuesdays, May 10 and 24 from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m.
Learn to protect yourself from future falls through exercise, balance and strength training. At Self-Defense for Older Adults, a black-belt instructor will teach participants to ward-off assaults and attacks using leverage. Offered by Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, this class is held at the Center for Healthy Living located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood. The cost is $15 for five one-hour classes. Audiology Program with Dr. Boyer
Wednesday, May 11 from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.
The Center for Healthy Aging and the Department of Audiology at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus have teamed up to present a discussion led by Sue Ellen Boyer, AuD, FAAA, as she discusses age-related hearing loss and facts about hearing aids. Dr. Boyer will also explore common signs of hearing loss and tips on hearing loss prevention. A Hearing Health Quiz will be offered free of charge as part of the program and light refreshments will be served. This event takes place at the Jackson Township Senior Center, located at 45 Don Connor Drive in Jackson. Registration is required through the Jackson Township Senior Center by calling 732.928.2313.
FREE Bone Density Screenings at Manchester ShopRite
Thursday, May 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
No bones about it – bone health is an important part of overall health. Join health coaches from the Center for Healthy Aging at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus to receive your free bone density screenings and learn more about your bone health. In addition, Jennifer Klein, RD from the ShopRite of Manchester will be on hand to discuss food choices that can help combat osteoporosis. These free screenings will be offered at the Manchester ShopRite, located at 1001 New Jersey 70 in Manchester Township. No registration is required.

Thursdays, May 12 and 26 from 7 to 8 p.m.
Don’t be a target! This ongoing program is for men and women of all ages who want to learn to protect themselves from personal assaults, street attacks and abductions. The Center for Healthy Aging at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus will be on hand at the Brick Township Senior Center to provide free health screenings. Staff will be offering blood pressure and glucose screenings to residents over 60 years old. This event will be held at Brick Township Senior Center, located at 373 Adamston Road in Brick. No registration is required.
Osteoporosis 101 and Free Bone Density Screenings
Monday, May 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Osteoporosis can potentially affect men and women of all ages and races. Join staff from the Center for Healthy Aging as they discuss the nature, risk factors, as well as how to recognize the signs and symptoms of osteoporosis. This informative workshop, taking place at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus located at 600 River Avenue in Lakewood, will be followed by optional, complimentary bone density screenings. Diabetes Self-Management Education
Thursdays, May 19 and 26 from 10 a.m. to Noon
More than 21 million people in the U.S. have been diagnosed with diabetes. The Center for Healthy Living at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus offers a Diabetes Self-Management Education program staffed by knowledgeable health professionals who provide comprehensive information about managing diabetes. Recognized by the American Diabetes Association, this program offers education for those living with diabetes on managing the disease so they can maintain healthy, active lives and reduce their risk for complications. Taught by registered nurses and registered dietitians – all Certified Diabetes Educators – the program also includes a presentation by Christopher Blakeslee, DPM, a podiatrist at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus. Sessions are held at the Center for Healthy Living, located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood. A doctor’s prescription is required. Registration is required by calling 732.886.4731 or 732.923.5025.
Skin Cancer Screening with Dr. Tarlow
Thursday, May 19 from 11 a.m. to Noon
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. In an effort to combat this disease, the Center for Healthy Living at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus will present free skin cancer screenings for those ages 60 and older. Screenings will be performed by board certified dermatologist Dr. Mordechai Tarlow. This event takes place at the Center for Healthy Living, located at 198 Prospect Street in Lakewood. Aging Eyes with Dr. Patel
Tuesday, May 24 from 11 a.m. to Noon
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, one in three Americans will have a vision-impairing eye disease by age 65. To remind the public of the importance of eye care, Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus presents Aging Eyes. This program, led by Dr. Kinnari K. Patel from Invision Eyecare, will discuss how to keep eyes healthy and how to recognize that it’s time for a professional eye exam. Senior Health and Fitness Day

Please join Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus at their annual Senior Health and Fitness Celebration- a health and fitness event for older adults.
