New NJ School Funding Plan: How Will Your Town Be Hurt Or Helped?

A new school funding plan could provide millions more to a number of New Jersey districts but cut millions of dollars from others (see map at bottom of this story).

There would be many winners and losers under a Democrat Legislature deal that would allocate $100 million more than the school funding Gov. Chris Christie proposed for the 2017-18 fiscal year. But others could lose millions in so-called "adjustment aid," which was created in 2008 to make sure districts would not see big drops in their state aid when a new formula went into effect.

Toms River is one of 10 districts that would see cuts exceeding $1 million in funding, while Brick Township would would see a $2.2 million reduction, according to information released by the Senate Republican Office, which broke the figures down by state legislative district (see below).

Jersey City would have its aid cut the most, roughly $8.5 million or more than 20 percent, from the $418,779,890 the district was to receive under the Christie budget. East Orange would have its aid slashed $3.13 million, 17.5 percent from the $178 million it was to receive.

Other districts that would see cuts of more than $1 million include: Washington Township in Gloucester County would lose 2.069 million; Vineland would lose 2.059 million; Middletown ($1.18 million); Manalapan-Englishtown ($1.25 million) and Neptune ($1.3 million).

Toms River and Brick, meanwhile, continue to recover from the havoc wreaked on lives and property tax bases of both districts. Toms River's 2017-18 school budget included the elimination of 17 jobs, according to a Shorebeat report, and an increase in the tax rate of .67 cents in Beachwood to nearly 4 cents in Toms River Township.
