New Person Charged In 2022 Parkway Shooting At The Jersey Shore

TOMS RIVER, NJ — Authorities have filed new charges in a 2022 shooting on the Garden State Parkway that injured a man.

A juvenile delinquency complaint was filed on Monday charging a person with two counts of attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in the Jan. 12, 2022 shooting, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said,

The person who has been charged in the shooting was a juvenile at the time, and as such information about the person's identity is being withheld, Billhimer said.

The charges come more than four years after another person was charged in the case.

William B. Sabo of Berkeley Township, who was 22 at the time, was arrested a few days after the incident and charged with attempted homicide, along with weapons and drug charges following a search of his home and a vehicle that turned up two firearms and 2.5 ounces of marijuana, authorities said at the time.

Sabo later pleaded guilty to weapons possession and drug charges, court records show.

The shooting incident started with an argument at the Exxon Mobil gas station at the corner of Route 37 and Commonwealth Boulevard in Manchester, authorities said. The victim, who was in one vehicle, left the gas station and headed for the Garden State Parkway, and was followed by a Dodge Charger, according to the prosecutor's office.

As the victim was traveling on the Parkway, the driver of the Dodge Charger fired multiple gunshots at the victim’s vehicle, with one of them hitting the victim in the leg, the prosecutor's office said.

A passenger in the victim’s vehicle drove the victim to Community Medical Center in Toms River, and he was ultimately taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was treated for his injuries and subsequently released, authorities said.

The prosecutor's office said the shooting has remained under investigation since it happened on Jan. 12, 2022.

The vehicle that was searched at Sabo's house was not a Dodge Charger.

"Continuing investigation since that date has led to the identification of the subject individual as the driver of the Dodge Charger who fired at the victim’s vehicle," the prosecutor's office said. "This individual is currently in custody on an unrelated matter."
