Northern Ocean Habitat ReStore Awarded by Department of Environmental Protection
NJ Habitat ReStores, including the Northern Ocean Habitat ReStore in Toms River, were honored the Department of Environmental Protection.

NEPTUNE, N.J. - The New Jersey Habitat ReStores received the Outstanding Achievement in Recycling Award from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection at the 37th Annual Recycling Symposium & Awards Luncheon on October 18. By accepting donations of building materials, appliances, furniture, tools, plumbing, hardware and more, Habitat ReStores divert tons of reusable materials from local landfills; six New Jersey ReStores sampled reported diverting over 9,400 tons of material since 2015, not including metal or other recycling programs. With over 850 ReStores in 49 states, New Jersey has 20 Habitat for Humanity affiliates and 12 ReStores, including the newly relocated Habitat ReStore in Toms River.
Habitat for Humanity ReStores offer a one-of-a-kind recycling option to local municipalities. With tipping fees in New Jersey exceeding $80 per ton, the hundreds of tons of donations that are removed from the waste stream directly reduce costs to local government. Some Habitat ReStores offer pick-up services, reducing collection and handling costs; the Northern Ocean Habitat ReStore picks-up items free of charge for residents of northern Ocean County.
Where most nonprofit organizations operating retail centers only offer clothes and home décor recycling options, Habitat ReStores take donations of reusable furniture, appliances and building materials from corporations, construction companies and individuals. These items are given a second chance at life and are sold to the public at 40% to 90% off retail prices. All proceeds from the ReStore support the construction of affordable housing and home repair projects for those in need right in that very same community.
