Ocean County Students Honored For Overcoming Challenges

The "Unsung Hero" award highlights students who have faced major adversity, challenges or shown great improvement in school.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — It's awards season at schools across the country, where students are receiving academic accolades and athletic honors.

Last week, the Ocean County prosecutor's office and the Ocean County Association of School Administrators took time out to honor students who make a contribution of a different kind to their schools and communities.

The Unsung Hero Student Recognition awards honor students from across Ocean County, nominated by their schools. The program marked its fourth year, with Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato and Loren B. Fuhring, president of the association, presenting the awards during a ceremony at Frog Pond Elementary School in Littl Egg Harbor Township.

The program gives every Ocean County school the opportunity to submit one student from the highest graduating class as the school's "UnSung Hero."

"This is not an academic award," the prosecutor's office said. "The award criteria cites that the student has overcome some type of major adversity, challenge (physical or emotional) and/or has shown immense improvement."

The recipients from across Ocean County received award certificates in a “You Make A Difference” decorative folder frame and a commemmorative video was produced as well. See the students who were honored.
