Ortley Beach Beach Sweep Needs Volunteers

The trash collection and cleanup effort at Ortley Beach, like dozens of others along the coast, needs helping hands.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — Organizers are seeking volunteers to participate in the CLean Ocean Action Beach Sweep at Third Avenue in Ortley Beach on Saturday.

Meet at St. Elisabeth's Chapel at 5 Third Avenue to check in; bags and and data cards will be distributed and instructions will be given there by Justin Lamb, who is the captain of the Ortley Beach cleanup.

Parking is first-come, first-serve, organizers said. The cleanup runs from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Late arrivals should go to the beach to find organizers and participants.

"When you are finished, please remember to bring your data card and garbage bags back to the centralized meeting location, tally your data, and give to the beach captain at the end of the beach sweep," organizers said.

Clean Ocean Action issued the following tips and reminders:

  • Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult
  • Please bring and wear your own gloves. Gardener's gloves are best or even winter gloves (as they may be washed) or rubber gloves will work. (all other materials will be provided)
  • Attend rain or shine
  • Wear sunscreen
  • Stay off the dunes
  • Respect wildlife
  • Wear closed-toed, hard-soled shoes such as sneakers (no open-toed sandals, please)
  • Reduce single-use plastics; bring a reusable water bottle
  • Dress for the weather (it’s usually chillier at the beach)

The weather forecast for Saturday is for chilly temperatures, with a high in the low 60s, and a chanced of rain after 11 a.m.
