"Scene at the Shore" group art show

When you hear the words "Jersey Shore" do you picture beach life? Thrill rides and arcades? Winding paths through the Pine Barrens? Nightlife and the music scene? The ten artists featured in "Scene at the Shore" use their talents to bring all of these scenes to life, and many more. The group art show at the Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts will feature art works in watercolor, acrylic, oil on canvas, photography, wood-block prints and mixed media. Artists include Mary Jo Austin, Helen Harris, Eileen Kendig, Anne LaBonte Neff, Janice Collinson, Donna D’Amico, Elsa Herrman, Paul Bonelli, Joseph Imbesi and Ann Hayes.

When choosing the artists to include in the group show, different styles and viewpoints was the goal. "I wanted artists who could bring their personal perspective to the theme" says artist and curator Ann Hayes. "Artists who live here and find inspiration in the dynamic beauty of the coast. Several different artists may depict a similar scene - and the contrast in style, medium and viewpoint is fascinating."

Hayes describes her own style as "natural realism," capturing the everyday beauty found in both nature and man-made artifacts in paintings of the boardwalk arcades, seascapes and Barnegat Bay. "Working only in transparent watercolor has many technical challenges that keeps it interesting" explains Hayes. "There is never a point where you have completely mastered the medium."

The show will be on display from December 2nd through the 22nd. There will be a free artist's reception on Sunday, December 4th from 1 - 4 pm. The public is invited to meet the artists, hear more about their work and enjoy light refreshments. The Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts is located at Ocean County College, 1 College Drive, Toms River.
