TOMS RIVER, NJ — When the credits roll Sunday evening on the final showings of "Where the Crawdads Sing" and "Bullet Train" at the AMC Seacourt 10 in Toms River, it will be the final curtain for the movie theater.
The theater is closing permanently after 32 years of helping moviegoers make memories in Toms River. It has been a fixture along Hooper Avenue since it first opened in 1990, with multiple popcorn and snack stands and 10 movie screens to see the latest releases.
The opening of the Marquee Cinemas Orchard 10 on Route 37 in 2007, with fancy seats and digital projection, brought competition to the Seacourt theater, but it had remained a place for first dates, birthday movie trips with friends and more for years. AMC officials have not responded to requests for comment about the Toms River theater's closure, which comes as the industry is beginning to see a significant return to the theaters for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic shut everything down in March 2020 for several months.
During the pandemic, people turned to streaming services and some movies that normally would have been released with big box office hopes went straight to online platforms, Variety reported. But with pandemic concerns easing, people are returning to favorite pursuits.

"Behavioral change is slow, and in the last two-plus years of the pandemic, people couldn’t go to the movie theater and got out of the habit," Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution, told Variety in June.
The report said movies with a wider appeal also were drawing more people to see films on the big screen again.
