Small Craft Advisory Remains Off Jersey Shore As Hermine Lingers

Strong waves continue to make it hazardous for small boats as the storm slowly drifts east.

As Hermine continues to meander and slowly move east in the Atlantic Ocean, a small craft advisory remains in effect, the National Weather Service said Wednesday.

Wave heights of 3 to 5 feet will continue through Wednesday afternoon, with winds out of the north at 15 to 20 knots, shifting to northwest later. A northeast swell with a dominant period of 7 seconds — meaning the waves are 7 seconds apart.

The U.S. Coast Guard was patrolling Manasquan Inlet over Labor Day weekend to prevent boaters from venturing out into the ocean because the waters were so roiled by Hermine.

The swells and the gusting winds will continue to make things dicey for boaters through the weekend. The National Weather Service is predicting swells with a dominant period of 8 seconds through Thursday evening, and another cold front is expected to move in over the weekend, bringing with it southwest winds of 15 to 20 knots and seas of 4 to 6 feet Saturday night into Sunday.
