South Toms River Mayor Dies At 66

Greg Handshy died Sunday. He was a councilman before becoming mayor, and a member of UA Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 9.

SOUTH TOMS RIVER, NJ — Greg Handshy, mayor of South Toms River, has died at the age of 66.

Handshy died Sunday, according to Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home. His cause of death has not yet been released.

He served as councilman from 2013-2015 and again from 2017-18, and became mayor in 2019, the borough said.

"With a heavy heart the Council members of the Borough of South Toms River announce the passing of Mayor Gregory Handshy," the borough said Wednesday. "Our thoughts and prayers are with family and friends of Mayor Handshy. May he Rest in Peace."

Handshy's friends, family, and several residents of South Toms River expressed their condolences on social media and on the funeral home's memorial page for him.

"He was always thinking of what was best for the town he loved, was always ready to help a friend or fellow Democrat and he will be sorely missed," the Ocean County Democrats said in a Facebook post. "Greg was a proud member of Plumbers and Pipefitter's Local 9. Our deepest sympathy to his wife, Shirley and his family."
