Superstorm Sandy Documentary Screening On Tap Monday Night In Toms River

"Heartbreak and Healing After Sandy," by Toms River filmmaker Sandra Levine, is being screened as part of Toms River's NEA Big Read program.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — How do you survive when everything you know has been turned inside out and upside down?

That's the central question and theme of the Toms River Regional School District's NEA Big Read program, which is exploring the novel "Station Eleven" and drawing parallels between the book and post-Superstorm Sandy life at the Jersey Shore. The NEA Big Read also aims to engage the community in those efforts as well.

To that end, there is a free screening set for Monday, Oct. 9, of the documentary "Heartbreak and Healing After Sandy." Produced by independent Toms River filmmaker Sandra Levine, the documentary captures the devastation as well as some of the early rebuilding efforts.

As the five-year anniversary of the storm that forever changed the landscape of the Jersey Shore nears, there's no question much progress has been made. There's also no question that there still remains much work to be done.

The screening includes a discussion with Levine about the process and what motivated her to make it.
