'Thank God You Pulled Me Over:' Police Receive Note Of Thanks

The writer says she was pulled over for drunk driving in 2014, and the arrest has put her on a better path.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — Usually when someone gets arrested, the last thing they feel is grateful to the police officers who arrested them.

Toms River police, however, received a thank you note recently from someone they arrested on drunk driving charges a few years ago.

They shared the letter in a post on Facebook.

"I wanna thank you from the bottom of my heart," the writer says in the note. "If it wasn't for you, my mom may have lost a daughter or worse I could have taken someone's life."

The writer said the arrest put her on the path to straightening out her life.

"I don't remember much from that night," the writer says. "I thank god every day that I'm alive and thank god you pulled me over."

"Being police officers often puts us on a collision course with people who are at a very difficult or low point in their lives," the police department's Facebook post said. "Contrary to what some people in society believe, we do not enjoy causing negative effects on people’s lives by arresting them or issuing them traffic summonses. We try and make a difference every day when we leave our families at home to ride out into this big, bad, and beautiful world."

"Every day we see good and evil cohabitating side by side with only a thin line dividing the boundaries. We humbly and readily stand guard on that line to protect our neighbors," the post said.

"However infrequent a letter like this arrives, we are reminded of why we do what we do," the police department post said.
