TOMS RIVER, NJ — Toms River residents had an opportunity to meet and talk with the police officers who patrol their streets on Tuesday at the township's National Night Out event.
The township participated in the event, which aims to bring communities together and build relationships between law enforcement and residents, for the first time.
The event at Shelter Cove Park included demonstrations by the K-9 and motorcycle units, displays from the emergency services, fire and first aid units, and bounce houses, face-painting, music and food.

The event also gave residents a chance to see a different side of the police officers. That included Officer Michael Cassidy, who stepped up and did the Cupid Shuffle with one of the youngsters in attendance. "We’d like to extend a special thank you to the Perlmutter Family ShopRite for donating all of the food for the night," the police department's Facebook post noted. "It was truly appreciated and very much enjoyed!"
