Toms River Residents Going Back To JCP&L Under Energy Aggregation, For Now

Supply prices weren't competitive when the town sought bids in March, and the current contract ends in June, according to the township.

Toms River residents who have been participating in the township’s energy aggregation program will be switched back to Jersey Central Power & Light for billing, at least temporarily, according to a notice on the township’s website.

The current contract for the first round of the Toms River Community Energy Aggregation Program, which has been serving residents since March 2013, expires in June. In preparation for the end of the contract, bids were sought for the second round of the energy supply program.

“However, the initial bid prices received did not produce enough savings to warrant a new contract award at this time,” the notice said. “The township will therefore monitor market conditions and re-bid at a time when prices are deemed to be more favorable.”

By law, the price charged to the consumer must always be equal to or less than the regular retail price charged by the utility company.

The township sent the notice this month to all residents participating in the aggregation program, telling them that as of June everyone participating in the township’s program will be returned to JCP&L. They have been served by NRG Home, which had been Dominion Energy Services until Dominion and NRG merged halfway through the contract, officials said.

The town hopes a second round of bidding will produce a more favorable result and a return to energy aggregation in September, the notice said.

“The township will therefore monitor market conditions and re-bid at a time when prices are deemed to be more favorable,“ the notice said.
