Toms River School Threat Rumors 'Not Credible,' Police Say

Beachwood police and Toms River schools administrators said there will be extra security at the schools out of an abundance of caution.

BEACHWOOD, NJ – After spending Thursday investigating "numerous social media posts" spreading rumor of a threat to Toms River Intermediate South, Beachwood police said there was no credibility to the threat.

Both Toms River school administrators and Beachwood police issued messages to try to quell the rumors that had spread like wildfire all day. Toms River Intermediate South Principal Paul Gluck sent an email to parents about 5:30 p.m., which some parents shared on social media, saying the district had been in communication with police and was working in concert to ensure the safety of students and staff.

The Beachwood Police Department posted a press release to its Facebook page shortly before 6 p.m. echoing what was contained in the school's email, and emphasizing that while authorities had determined the rumors were not credible, they were continuing to follow up on leads and information.

"Out of an abundance of caution and to secure the continued safety of our children, the Beachwood Police Department will have an added presence at our schools tomorrow," the police department post said.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office also posted on social media, noting the role of its High Tech Crimes Unit in helping to investigate the social media postings. "There is no credible threat," the prosecutor's office said.

Still, some parents were on the fence about sending kids to school Friday, which is scheduled to be a low-key day for students, several noted.
