Toms River Schools Adjust Grading Policies In Coronavirus Crisis

The grading policy change will apply to intermediate and high school students.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — The Toms River Regional School Board approved a resolution Wednesday night that will provide a pass-fail option for students on their fourth-quarter grades.

The resolution was passed because of the impact of the shift to virtual learning brought on by the coronavirus crisis, and the challenges it has created for students and teachers.

Under the resolution, intermediate and high school students may be offered a pass-fail option that applies to their classes from the beginning of the fourth marking period through the end of the 2019-2020 school year.

A passing grade under the pass-fail option will be a 65 or better, but it will not affect the student's final grade, which will be made up of the average of the first, second and third marking periods.

A student who has a grade for the quarter of 64 or lower will receive a fail for the quarter, and the final grade for the year will be an average of the first, second and third marking periods and an F for the fourth marking period.

The last day of school is scheduled for June 12.
