Toms River Seeks $900K Green Acres Grant For Field Of Dreams
The application was on a list released by the DEP of requests from around the state.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — Toms River officials are hoping for help from the state Green Acres funding for the ongoing work at the Toms River Field of Dreams facility.
The township has applied for $902,875 in Green Acres funding from the state Department of Environmental Protection, according to information the state released this week.
The township is requesting the money in conjunction with the Toms River Field of Dreams organization to help offset the costs of the all-inclusive recreational facility at Bey Lea Park, estimated at $3,611,500, according to the information filed with the DEP. The DEP previously approved the use of part of Bey Lea Park, which originally was purchased with Green Acres funding, for the facility.

Work got under way on the Toms River Field of Dreams project in March, with NJ Site & Utility Contractors of Jackson donating time, equipment and crews to clear trees at the site.
The Field of Dreams organization continues to seek donors and sponsors for the many aspects of the facility, which is specifically designed for individuals with special needs but also will have developmentally appropriate activities for children without disabilities.

The application to the DEP notes the planned improvements include "facilities that promote both active and passive recreation," with playground equipment, ball courts, mini golf area, garden and reading areas, benches, pavilions with tables and seating, and a concession stand.
"The project will serve to increase awareness within the special needs community while encouraging an inclusive outdoor recreational environment for everyone's enjoyment," the DEP information said.
Funding the construction is only part of the effort; a capital campaign is under way along with a GoFundme campaign, to support ongoing upkeep once the construction is completed. You can read more and learn how you can help on the project website.
