Skateboarding is a sport. As a matter of fact, it’s going to be an Olympic sport in the 2020 Olympics. As of right now, there are zero places in Toms River designated for skateboarding. Actually, in all 13 of Toms River’s public parks it’s illegal to ride a skateboard. Yes, illegal. It’s treated as a crime. Imagine going to a park and being told it’s illegal to throw a baseball, and finding out you can get fined for playing baseball or frisbee. Imagine being told that the only place you can legally use a ball is in the street. Is that a safe place for people to play? No. We need a safe place in our town for skateboarding. There are facilities for golf, hockey, football, tennis, baseball, basketball, pretty much any sport you can think of, except skateboarding. Skateboarding is an American past time. It is a sport created by a coastal American community. It’s time for the township to stop vilifying skateboarders and its time for the town to create a sanctuary for it’s athletes.
