Toms River Woman Takes Up Collection To Help Tent City Homeless

Blankets, food, socks, longjohns and more are on her wish list for those who live in the homeless encampment.

With the frigid temperatures gripping Ocean and Monmouth counties at the moment, a local woman is seeking the community's help to assist the residents of Tent City.

Liz Lewis, a Toms River resident, is hoping that local residents will be moved to help the homeless who live in Tent City. She is taking up a collection of items to donate to the group to help them get through the cold weather.

Lewis said she will be at the Kohl’s parking lot at 3 p.m. Saturday to collect blankets, coats, socks, long johns, water, propane, logs for fireplaces and canned foods for the residents of Tent City in Howell.

"It’s way too cold out there for these people to be living out there in tents with not enough supplies to keep them warm," Lewis said.

Lewis also is seeking Walmart gift cards to give to Minister Steve Brigham, the longtime advocate for the group of people who live in the encampment, to purchase propane to refill tanks.

Brigham and others have formed an organization called Destiny's Bridge, the goal of which is to eventually help the homeless transition to independent and self-sufficient living. For more information on Destiny's Bridge and how you can help, click here.
