TOMS RIVER, NJ — The distribution of free meals to those in need in Toms River will continue Friday with another round of the "Pop the Trunk" event, to help those who are in need in the midst of the coronavirus crisis.

However, the Operation BBQ Relief meal distribution at the Presbyterian Church is canceled this week while the owner makes a repair for his smoker.

Pop The Trunk will again take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the following sites:

In addition, there will be a food distribution at First Assembly of God Church, 800 Bay Ave., on Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

"First Assembly of God Church, Paul Gifford and Paul J. Hulse are true leaders in this community, between starting the Code Blue program in Toms River that provided shelter to 193 different people this winter (2020) to providing food every day to those who call," Toms River Councilman Terrance Turnbach said.

On Saturday, Alive Again Alliance Church, 1060 Church Road, will distribute food from 10 a.m. to noon. "Alive Again Alliance Church has consistently answered the call of this community, seeking nothing but the feeling that comes from helping others," Turnbach said.

At the Pop The Trunk event, residents can pick up a food box consisting of multiple days groceries for free. Drive to one of the locations, pull in and pop your trunk. The food box will be placed in your trunk by a volunteer. There is no need to register or schedule in advance.

If you cannot make it to one of the five locations due to health concerns, the township will make every effort to deliver a food box to your door step.

The food distribution has been through Fulfill, formerly the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

Operation BBQ Relief hopes to be back in operation on May 23 at the Presbyterian Church.
